Managing Director’s Review 2018

We are nearby, but see far ahead

We are living in a time when everyone is talking about climate change and all of us are expected to do things that will promote a sustainable future. As an energy generator and supplier, we have a significant role in this respect. Responsibility is part of all our operations and I am happy to confirm that during this last year we have taken many significant steps towards a carbon-neutral Turku, cleaner power generation and further improved energy well-being for our customers.

The year saw two significant achievements. We gained almost 70 new colleagues when we acquired the operating and maintenance business for the Naantali power station from Fortum. Now we are almost 340 professionals driving Turku Energia and our objectives forward.

We also achieved our objective set for 2020 ahead of time. For some years, we have invested in the long-term to increase renewable sources of energy and to reduce emissions, and now over half of the electricity and heat we sell is generated from renewable sources and energy. The completion of the new Naantali power station and the fact that it uses bio-fuel have been the main factor in our achieving this objective. A new transport system was completed at the plant at the end of the year, and it will enable bio-fuel to be delivered by sea as well.

In October we celebrated the commissioning of the new steam generating plant in Artukainen. The plant will generate steam and district heat from bio-fuels for the major industrial companies in the area and will thus help our customers on their journey towards a carbon neutral future. Last year we also procured more wind, solar and hydro-power with the objective of further increasing the share of renewables in the years to come as part of our journey towards carbon-free power generation. We have set our next objectives even higher.

We also asked our customers how successful we have been in our work. The results were surprising and gratifying to see, our customers were pleased with us and gave us valuable feedback to help us further improve our operations. Our reliability of supply once again remained at an excellent level, and economically the year largely met our expectations.

This gives us a good base to move ahead.
